Introducing the talented Natasha Peacock
What inspired this collection? OR what inspires the ideas for your collections?
This collection was inspired by the Ladies Alpine Club at the turn of the 20th Century, and female hikers such as Lucy Walker and Wanda Rutkiewicz. I also looked at the 70’s Stonemasters a lot for inspiration. I like thinking about the idea of the modern adventurous woman and what she might wear.
Do you think London is the best city in the world for Fashion?
I think London is definitely the best city in the world for new, young fashion and talent. The graduate designers here always bring something fresh and exciting to the industry. Even though times are currently more tough economically, we still seem to be less driven by the idea of commercial success than the other fashion capitals, the clothes are always far more experimental.
Which designers/artists do you think are at the forefront of Fashion and Design right now?
Craig Green. He nails it every time.
Are your designs intended as art, or lifestyle? Do you believe fashion should be functional?
Both? The beauty of fashion for me is an artistic vision realised in wearable clothing. To interpret any aspect of the world around you and bring it back into an item of clothing someone can live their life in is my ultimate goal.
If you could delve into any designers’ studio, dead or alive, who would it be?
Any of the Parisian Ateliers in the mid 1900’s would be amazing to experience, YSL, Chanel, Givenchy etc.
If you could dress anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be?
Marlene Dietrich. Her defiance of gender norms through her choice of clothing in the 30’s massively assisted in redefining women’s wardrobes today.
Why did you opt for womenswear / menswear?
I don’t tend to design specifically with a gender in mind. I’m drawn to creating bold shapes that could lend themselves to either the male or female form, I like to try and use aspects of both disciplines within my work.
Which fashion trend would you love / hate to see return of?
Fashion trends seem pretty dead nowadays. There are so many that blow up and die so quickly because of social media, they’re gone before they really have a chance to take off because everyone’s already on to the next new thing.
What’s the hardest part of designing a new collection?
Finding the right research! Once I’ve found those key images, the rest of the concept and ideas start to unravel and fall into place.
What does success mean for you? OR Where do you want to be in 5 years’ time?
Success for me is having the opportunity to make a living from doing what I love. To be able to be creatively inspired and challenged on a daily basis.
