The latest opening from The Japan Group, Sakagura has opened its doors in Regent Street’s covetable food and drink hub, Heddon Street.
Boasting cool, contemporary interiors with intimate booths and a theatrical kappo counter, Sakagura promises Japan’s unique ‘omotenashi’ hospitality, for a dining experience that’s relaxed and steeped in tradition.
Home to a vast menu of Southern Japanese dishes and a dedicated sake bar, London’s foodies are tipping this as the latest must-try restaurant in London.
The Food
Born from a collaboration with the team at two Michelin-starred The Araki, the food at Sakagura is exceptional. Chef Jin Yackshin (formerly of aqua and Shoryu) heads up the kitchen, with Executive Chef Kanji Furukawa, preparing a menu of authentic, Southern Japanese cuisine.
‘Washoku’, a medley of rice, miso and fish dominates the menu alongside tempting ‘Hakata Yakitor’ skewers – we’re coveting the Kurobuta (Berkshire black pork belly with halen mon sea salt). A feast for all the senses, diners can also enjoy hand-made udon, soba noodles and freshly made sushi.
Too many options to choose from? Then the Shokado Bento box is for you, including seven dishes from the menu ranging from sashimi, tofu and miso soup.
The Drink
It’s no surprise that Japan’s iconic rice wine, sake, is the star of Sakagura’s covetable bar menu.
Gekkeikan, one of the original and oldest sakes in Japan is the go-to house pour, served in traditional masu cups. There’s also a finely curated sake cellar well stocked by Sakagura’s sommelier, with a variety of championed labels from its own brewery.
For sake novices and fans alike, there is also a bespoke menu of tempting sake-based cocktails to enjoy this traditional tipple in new and creative ways.
